Propane Uses & Tips

What is propane?

Propane (also called LPG -- liquefied petroleum gas -- or LP gas) is a liquid fuel stored under pressure.  In most systems, propane is vaporized to a gas before it leaves the tank.  Propane is flammable when mixed with air (oxygen) and can be ignited by many sources, including open flames, smoking materials, electric sparks, and static electricity.  Severe freeze burn or frostbite can result if propane liquid comes in contact with your skin.

Propane gas or LP (liquid propane) has been on the increase in the last ten years as an alternate source of home heating fuel. Natural gas and propane gas should not be confused with each other. Natural gas is a product of the environment and propane gas is a by-product of crude oil.

Converting To Propane From Electricity Makes Sense

Propane works hard, burns clean, and it costs less than electricity. Because propane burns hotter and more evenly than many other fuels, appliances powered by propane use less energy and in turn save you money. Propane is one of the most efficient fuels you can use and is a great alternative to electricity for home heating.

Adding Propane to Your Home - Even When the majority is Oil-Heated

Propane may be a good alternative to oil for heating a newly constructed addition to your home. You can use propane for space heating, heating water, drying clothes, cooking, fueling backup power generators, heating swimming pools and powering outdoor lights. Finally, propane provides clean-burning flames for your fireplace, and it costs up to 60% less to operate than wood-burning fireplaces.

Maintenance and safety tips for your propane dryer

  1. Be sure that your dryer's vent is unobstructed.
  2. Clean lint screen after each use.
  3. Clean exhaust duct periodically.
  4. Check outside vent periodically and make sure it opens and closes freely.
  5. Never run your dryer when not at home.

Maintenance and safety tips for your propane furnace

  1. Follow manufacturer's installation and operating instructions.
  2. Have your furnace and venting inspected annually.
  3. Change your furnace filters regularly.
  4. Before firing up and using your propane gas furnace for the first time each season, be sure to have your venting system checked. Insects may have built nests which obstruct flow.
  5. At the first indication of incomplete combustion (yellow flame instead of blue, or soot present), contact a service technician immediately.
