A blower door is set up to place the home/building under a negative pressure to highlight drafts that are or may be occurring throughout the structure. A boiler heat system is measured to insure adequate base board and radiant heat performance. A forced hot air system is checked to insure that there is no leakage to the outside of the home or to unwanted areas.
Most every one knows the drafts in their homes. That cold door or window and that cold corner you don't like to sit in. But most don't know the cause or how to fix it.
This is where the home energy audit can help. Bourne's can run a comprehensive test in the building. A blower door can be set up to place the building under a negative pressure to highlight the drafts in the home. This will not only show the obvious drafts, but the smaller hidden drafts, such as the outlets and switches as well as air passing thru interior walls sill plates basement areas and attics.
An audit will also be performed on your heating system to check the efficiency and to insure the unit is matched to the home. The boiler heat system is measured to insure adequate base board performance.
Forced air systems and the duct work are checked with a duct blaster, to insure that there is no leakage to the outside of the home and leakage to unwanted areas. The entire system is checked for balance and proper air flow.
All fuel burning systems are checked for proper venting as well as CO output. The range is also checked for excessive CO output.
Also a thermal scan can be done to show where insulation is lacking, or it's not performing at its best. The attic insulation will be measured to insure the proper amount of protection.
Every draft that is sealed or insulation that is repaired for optimal R- values puts money back in your pocket with fuel savings. The building envelope is your first defense to the weather. When it's -20 outside and the wind is blowing, you wouldn't sleep with the window open. Think of the drafts as having an open window. In the same weather you would probably have blankets on your bed; the insulation of your home works the same way.
