unoccupied homes and what to do to keep them safe in the winter

Seasonal or often unoccupied homes - An important safety tip.

No matter how you heat your home, maintaining your heat to a certain level is critical. Freeze-ups in an occupied/empty or unoccupied dwelling or home can cause expensive losses. Water from broken pipes can flood a house in a matter of hours causing structural damage to the house and loss of personal property.  Most insurance plans do not cover these incidents that happen to an unoccupied home.

Remember to prepare and protect your home against damage arising from a drop in or loss of heat.  Leaving your home unattended can result in frozen pipes and water damage. You should arrange for reliable and routine supervision of your home if you plan to be away from the premises for any length of time or consider a WESROC remote home heating monitor  as a great solution for unoccupied homes.  It is better to be safe than sorry.

We'd like to suggest some steps you can take to get more from your energy dollar:

  1. Make sure your heating system is operating at peak efficiency by having a professional tune-up.

  2. Keep baseboards and vents clear of rugs and furniture so heat output isn't blocked.

  3. Use automatic programmable thermostats. When used properly, they can reduce heating costs by about 10%. Be sure to recycle your old one properly. Mercury is dangerous. Drop your old thermostat at any Bourne's locations and we will recycle it responsibly for you.

  4. Upgrade to a new, high-efficiency heating system. It's a smart investment.

  5. Insulate pipes in unheated areas such as attics or crawl spaces.

  6. Insulate your home, especially windows and doors, with weather stripping and caulk to keep cold drafts out.

  7. Take advantage of convenient payment plans.
